God gave the growth

Last weekend I had the opportunity to watch a production of The Music Man at a United Methodist Church where I worked 5 years ago. During that time I was involved in some redesign of their sanctuary. It was an incredibly frustrating process: everyone had their own ideas of what the congregation needed, what changes were acceptable to our worship space, and we had to learn a lot about sound and technical challenges presented by the existing structure of the sanctuary.

A number of people in the planning group saw great potential for this space to become quality performance space: removing carpeting to achieve a more “live sound” and invest in different sound equipment from speakers to rewiring and adding microphones. At that time I never dreamed it would really come to fruition. My time working at that church ended before the construction completed.

However, returning to that sanctuary last week to see the musical production brought to life some of St. Paul’s words found in scripture, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.

Only three of the nine current ministries staff were there five years ago. In many ways I can name the seeds that were planted five years ago…their new staff has watered those seeds, and God has given them growth in areas I couldn’t actually fathom becoming reality! Even during all the conversation about potentially having orchestras and musicals at the church I couldn’t quite envision it happening at that time…but in God’s time all things are possible!
