“All theology is straw”

Last week a friend of mine from seminary died in his sleep. This is the second time in seven months that I have gotten a call with news like this.

Another good friend from seminary expressed this week, “At times like this all theology is straw.” I share in my friend’s grief and pain…but I don’t agree with the statement. It is true – so much of the everyday theology we hear (e.g. “God needed another Angel in heaven” an unbiblical and theologically unsound idea) doesn’t help at times like this.

But, theology (words about God, not just the study of God) gives me what I cling to right now:

Gospel of John, Chapter 11, verses 32-35

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked.

“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

Jesus wept.

God wept, God loves, may you find comfort in God.
