That none would have need

2009 was a hard year for many people in our church. Some lost loved ones, some lost jobs, and others struggled to keep their home. This holiday season I was privileged to help some members of our church anonymously help and support others in our church community. It can be hard to be forced into a position where you are no longer the “giver” but the “receiver” of giving…but scripture captures this truth for me:

2 Corinthians 8:14

14Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal.

Being part of a church community means that we help one another through the rough patches. We all have times of feast and we all have times of famine. When we’re blessed to be able to give we should remember what a real gift from God it is to be able to help someone else. When we’re blessed to be helped by a brother or sister in Christ we give thanks for God’s help through other people. No matter which position we are in we are blessed.

I hope as you reflect upon 2009 you can see God’s hand of blessing. Even in the midst of a tumultuous year God is faithful to us. Seeing God at work in this world, changing lives and changing people’s hearts is what makes my job the very best job in the world! I’m looking forward to another year filled with God’s blessing in 2010.
