Journal Entry Day 1

Wednesday, October 17

We have arrived safely at the Maputo Guest House. We will spend two nights here before going on to Chicuque. The flights went smoothly, although we spent a long time on airplanes! We left Dulles at 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday and arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. A small lay over there and then a short flight to Maputo had us in the Maputo airport by 8:15 p.m. The airport has been remodeled since I was here in 2010. Now it is very big, well marked with signs and shiny and new. In fact, today was a special day because the President of Mozambique was at the airport just a few hours before we landed, so that he could dedicate the domestic terminal that has also been remodeled.

Naftal and Ezekiel were at the airport awaiting our arrival. It was so good to meet Naftal in person after many emails and Skype conversations making our plans for the trip. He is the VIM coordinator for the Southern conference. Ezekiel serves as the Missouri Initiative Coordinator. There is a team here from Missouri now. They arrived today as well, and will head out to Cambine on Friday. They are connected with the Orphanage there, and will also be in Chicuque to distribute medical supplies on Saturday.

We are so thankful to be here safely. Dinner was delicious and we are looking forward to a goodnight’s sleep tonight.

Tomorrow we go to visit the conference office. There are two annual conferences in the country of Mozambique, the Southern and the Northern Conference. Beria is the UMC headquarters in the North and Maputo is where the South Annual Conference Office is located.
